Historical Milestones in Kuwait: Key Events on August 18

Today in history, Kuwait has seen a variety of crucial events molding its course in time. In 1952, Sultan Ibrahim Al-Klaib passed away aged 63 years. He was a distinguished individual who sat on the Al-Maaref council and municipal council alike. 38 years later, throughout the beginning of Iraq’s 1990 occupation, Iraqi authorities sent civilians from allied countries to several deliberate locations all over Kuwait and Iraq. Meanwhile, the United Nations Security Council urged Iraq to allow non-Iraqis to depart securely and not to put them in harm’s way. Then, in 1992, a defense treaty was signed in Paris between Kuwait and `France, strengthening bilateral security obligations.

By 1999, the Kuwait Health Insurance Company had been founded, launched by five million Kuwaiti Dinars in capital, and mostly owned by the Public Institution for Social Security. The next year, Marzoug Al-Marzoug, a prominent figure in Kuwaiti entertainment and a co-creator of its founding ensemble, passed away at 54. A breaking finding by Kuwait Oil Company happened in 2004, when they located a Jurassic oil reserve under Bahra Field. It contained crude oil with a 44-degree API gravity, able to turn out 4,860 barrels a day with 670.12 million cubic feet of associated gas. Three years later, a 4.3-magnitude earthquake was recorded by the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research in the southerly Al-Manageesh region. Just under a decade later, in 2016, Kuwait Petroleum Corporation ratified a memorandum of understanding with the Arab Petroleum Pipelines Company (SUMED) to explore possible oil ventures in unity.

During 2020, the Kuwait slowly eased back into regular life as COVID-19 measures were eliminated step-by-step. At the same time, the National Assembly discussed a no-confidence motion in opposition to Deputy Prime Minister Anas Al-Saleh, although he kept his stature in the end. This was launched by MP Shuaib Al-Muwaizri and backed by ten legislators. The opening of Kuwait’s first exclusive sports museum occurred in 2021, launched by sports reporter Hussein Al-Bloushi and being home to thousands of relics from football stars. Arriving at the most recent, 2024 saw Dr. Fawaz Al-Zaid become the first Kuwaiti to be appointed to the European Association for the Study of Diabetes’ global council. He is a leading researcher and head of the Department of Bioenergy and Neurosciences at Dasman Diabetes Institute, and the honor he received reflects his global scientific acclaim.
